After Sean McVay's return, Rams will make Matthew Stafford a $62 million player

After Sean McVay , the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, decided to return for 2023 season, the Rams made an important contract deal with Matthew Stafford , Super Bowl winner. Sources tell ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the Rams will pick up Stafford’s 2023 option bonus as well as his 2024 salary. These numbers are enough to pay the star quarterback $62 million in guaranteed cash.

Stafford, if the Rams had not chosen to accept this bonus option, would have been a post cap casualty. They would have accumulated $13.5 million against their 2023 caps and $36 million in 2024. Schefter points out.

McVay’s fate is uncertain, but there are also questions about Stafford’s.

The 34-year old suffered an injury-riddled Rams season, appearing in only nine games as he battled elbow issues and a spinal cord contusion. He also spent time in the concussion protocol.

Stafford stated repeatedly that he would return in 2023, and that his future with the Rams would not be tied to McVay.

The Rams and Stafford seem to be on the same wavelength. They have signed a contract with Stafford for at least the 2023 season.

The Rams’ Super Bowl victory celebration was not a great success.

The franchise posted a 5-12 record. This poor showing is compounded by the Rams’ financial situation and draft capital. This will make it difficult to build a team.

McVay’s offensive skills are as strong as any NFL team. Stafford, despite being down, is still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
