After less than two years, MacKenzie Scott filed for divorce from Dan Jewett

According to The New York Times, MacKenzie Scott, a billionaire Seattle philanthropist, has filed for divorce from Dan Jewett. She married Dan Jewett in March 2021.

According to The Times, Scott filed a petition in King County Superior Court for divorce on Monday. The Times reported that it had received a copy of the filing.

The Times reported that Scott had removed Jewett’s name from several websites where it was mentioned alongside hers.

Scott was married to Jeff Bezos (Amazon founder), but they divorced after 25 years of marriage. Jewett was a science teacher in Lakeside School. This exclusive private school is best known for being the alma mater for Bill Gates and Paul Allen. Scott attended Lakeside School.

Forbes reports that Scott, 52, is an author with a net worth $34.9 billion. Bloomberg estimates that Scott is worth $27.8billion and ranks her No. 41 on the index of the richest people in the world.

Scott has donated more than $12 million to charitable and non-profit organizations in the 12 years since her divorce from Bezos. This is part of her commitment under The Giving Pledge, where the super-rich pledge to give a majority of their wealth to charity.

Jewett’s commitment was previously displayed on a page that featured Scott’s Pledge letter. Also gone is a photograph of Scott and Jewett together.

Jewett, in his March 6, 2021 note, wrote that it was odd to plan to give away most of his wealth, as a teacher, he has never sought such status.

Jewett wrote, “Now, in a happy coincidence, I am married one of the most generous, kind, and caring people I know.” Jewett wrote, “And we joined her in a promise to pass on an immense financial wealth to others.”

Scott’s multibillion-dollar gifts received a lot of attention over the past two-years. For example, she gave $1.67 billion in July 2020, $4 billion in December 2020, and $2.7 billion June 2021. She announced $3.8 billion worth of donations in March to support 465 non-profit organizations.

She wrote an essay for Medium last December in which she said enough about the dollar signs and tried to focus on the meaning of philanthropy.
